What a Paystub Is?

A paystub (or paycheck stub) is a summary of your earnings, deductions for a pay period, and the net pay you take home. Whether you’re a worker or you own a business, our templates help you quickly generate professional paystubs—great for payroll, proof of income, or to keep for your records.

What Are the Important Parts of a Paystub

  1. Employee Information: Your name, address, and sometimes a partially masked Social Security Number.
  2. Employer Information: Employer name and contact information.
  3. Pay Period & Date: The duration of time (e.g. weekly, bi-weekly) and when the payment is made.
  4. Earnings: Your gross pay, including regular hours and any other compensation.
  5. Deductions: Taxes, insurance or contributions taken from your gross pay.
  6. Net Pay: The actual amount you receive after deductions.
  7. Year-to-Date (YTD): Total of your earnings and deductions in the year since January 1st (more on that below)

What is Additional Compensation?

Our in-depth templates allow for additional income. Here is what they mean when you generate your paystub:

  • Overtime: Time worked beyond your regular schedule, usually paid at 1.5x your rate.
  • Holiday Pay: Additional pay for working on holidays, normally at an increased rate.
  • Vacation Pay: Payment for accrued but unused vacation or paid time off.
  • Bonus: A lump-sum payout for performance or other reasons.
  • Float: Flexible hours or shift differentials based on your job.

These fields will default to 0.00, but they can be customized at the time of generating your paystub.

What Is the Meaning of “YTD”?

“YTD” means Year-to-Date. It is a running total of your earnings and deductions since the beginning of the year. For example:

  • YTD Earnings: Total amount you have made since January 1st
  • YTD Deductions: The sum of taxes or contributions deducted this year.

YTD — is vital to tracking income and verifying records for taxes or loans.
